Though playwright Tennessee Williams has been dead for over a quarter-century, his cinematic output continues to grow.

“The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond,” based on a screenplay Williams wrote in the 1950s, has finally come to the screen, and you can tell it’s Williams from a cotton field away: a haunted yet saucy Southern heroine who relies on the kindness of near-strangers, a doomed romance, an elderly opium user and a brief glimpse of a picturesque insane asylum.

Set in 1923 Mississippi, the story is simple: A young, lovely heiress (Bryce Dallas Howard, with dark hair making a fetching contrast to her porcelain skin), caring little about society’s conventions, pays an unwealthy man (Chris Evans) to be her escort at parties – and then, in between conversations with disapproving aunts (Ann-Margret) and bed-ridden addicts (Ellen Burstyn), realizes she’s fallen in love with him.

Director Jodie Markell gives it all a slow, showy, almost theatrical pace. At one point, interior lights dim and brighten though not touched by the characters, both heightening and cheapening the intimacy of the moment.

It’s minor Williams turned minor cinema, but there are nonetheless moments that resonate. Burstyn, lying on a bed and reminiscing about “the smoke of the burning poppy,” has an almost frightening intensity, her eyes both frantic and sadly resigned. The talented Howard gives her voice a mint-julep lilt that’s a pleasure to listen to, particularly when it seems to twist itself around Evans like a vine.

And though Markell can’t manufacture much drama when it isn’t there on the page, she does somehow make us smell magnolias, feel the thickness of the air on a warm autumn night, and sense the voluptuous heaviness of a dangling pair of diamond earrings, flashing like stars that disappear when morning comes.

THE LOSS OF A TEARDROP DIAMOND

2 1/2 stars

With Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Evans, Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margret, Mamie Gummer, Will Patton. Directed by Jodie Markell, from a screenplay by Tennessee Williams. 102 minutes. Rated PG-13 for some sexuality and drug content. [Source]

Unless actor Jeremy Renner is getting his information from a parallel universe, it’s sounding likely that Hawkeye has a role in Marvel’s upcoming movie slate. Still, even Renner is quick to admit that while he’s discussed the role with Marvel, he’s not a lock for the part.

Assuming the role exists and is still available, it’s worth wondering what type of actor would be best-suited for Clint Barton. I don’t think the part requires an action hero body, though an athletic physique is a must. Barton also has to be equal parts charming and arrogant without sacrificing his heroic qualities — and he’s got to be awesome with a bow and arrow, but that’s where pre-production training comes in!

Keeping those prerequisites in mind, I think the following five actors would be right on the mark for Hawkeye. BRADLEY COOPER: I already listed Bradley Cooper as a good choice for Oliver Queen, and while I don’t think the two characters are interchangeable, I do think he’d be great at both — particularly as Hawkeye, who is a better physical match for Cooper than Green Arrow. Besides, the onetime “Green Lantern” contender has all of the charm, wit and charisma that anyone could hope for out of Clint Barton. On top of that, I think he’d make for an excellent fit alongside actors like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle in the eventual “Avengers” team-up.

CHRIS EVANS: With the “Fantastic Four” reboot presumably calling for a casting overhaul, Chris Evans is currently without a superhero franchise to call his own — which is why he should be considered for another Marvel role, namely as Hawkeye in “The Avengers.” Evans plays cocky better than many actors out there, but his role as a tough-as-nails hero in Danny Boyle’s “Sunshine” proved that he also has the dramatic chops that Clint Barton requires. Plus, it would be terribly ironic if Evans landed Hawkeye after beating Renner out for a role in “The Losers” earlier this year.

CHRIS PINE: If his “Star Trek” daddy can play Thor, why can’t James Kirk himself play Clint Barton? After all, Chris Pine was one of the earliest rumored contenders for Hal Jordan in “Green Lantern” — a rumor that the actor quickly dispelled — but maybe he was just on the wrong side of the comic book aisle. Pine easily satisfies all of my personal qualifications for Hawkeye, though he has the added bonus of bringing a youthful presence to “The Avengers,” something that the movie likely needs.

JAMES MARSDEN: Like Evans, James Marsden is a former Marvel superhero without a current role after getting killed off in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Bringing him into the Marvel Studios fold as Hawkeye wouldn’t be a simple consolation prize, it would be an upgrade. Marsden never really had a chance to shine as Cyclops, but his work in other films like “Superman Returns” and even “27 Dresses” — don’t laugh, it’s true! — have shown his scene-stealing prowess when given the right material. Combined with his physical qualifications for the role, I think that Marsden would make for an excellent Clint Barton.

JEREMY RENNER: Let’s give credit where it’s due. Since all of these recent Hawkeye rumors stem from Jeremy Renner, it’s worth considering the actor — and honestly, after seeing him in “The Hurt Locker,” it’s hard to find a fault in this potential casting. Renner has just about every quality that you’d want to see in Clint Barton, and assuming he can learn how to pronounce Clint’s name correctly, his enlistment in “The Avengers” would be nothing short of awesome news. [Source]

There’s been some confusion as to what Chris Evan’s true intentions were with his shirtless ban that was enacted a few years ago. Although he claimed at the time that it was just for self-promoting photoshoots, a string of clothed movie roles — all of which (coincidentally?) flopped — left fans wondering if his bare chest ban extended to his on-screen work as well.

Well, this just released poster for his new movie (via), “Satisfaction,” promises to break that streak and deliver the goods. In the soon-to-shoot film, Chris plays a male escort who attempts to learn what real love is while satisfying clients like Sharon Stone.

Don’t know about you, but they had me at “male escort.” All that left to learn is whether or not we’ll get to see Chris’ American gigolo in the movie. [Source]

In “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” Chris Evans plays skateboarder-turned-actor Lucas Lee, one of the evil ex-boyfriends Scott Pilgrim must battle in order to win the heart of Ramona Flowers. While I don’t want to spoil the film for anyone who hasn’t read Bryan Lee O’Malley’s amazing series, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Evans’ character will, at some point, engage in some skating.

So, when we caught up with Evans recently, we had to ask him whether he took to board easily, or if he has a nasty case of road rash to remember the film.

“They put me in a few weeks of stunt training with a guy who made skateboarding look easy as pie,” said Evans. “It was an uphill battle.”

“I got comfortable enough shooting, but then of course, on the day of shooting, it all went out the window and I embarrassed myself miserably,” he laughed. “But that’s what stuntmen are for.”

However, the “Fantastic Four” actor told us he did manage to perform at least one trick as a result of his training—and you’ll be able to see it in the film.

“I actually pulled off one stunt that I did not think I was going to,” he explained. “You can probably pick it out of the movie. It’s just one big ollie… and I did it.” [Source]

Sharon Stone recently revealed in Prestige magazine that she will start shooting Satisfaction in January 2010. To be directed by Anya Camilleri, the drama will co-star Chris Evans and Carice van Houten (Valkyrie).

According Stone, Satisfaction is “about a male prostitute in London who loses the older woman who’s been taking care of him, and the call-out agency he’s worked for is tired of his behavior and don’t want to send him out any more. He goes looking for someone else to take care of him and he keeps trying to come on to [my character]. You think they have legitimately fallen in love, by his behavior and her behavior – until the call-out service starts sending him out again while he’s with her. He starts trying to break her down. And it’s incredible what they do together: a very, very fascinating journey.”
